Now is the time to get involved! So exciting! Your Sebastian City representatives have managed to get $1,500,000 in grant money to improve our already incredible Riverview Park on US1 and Veterans Memorial on Indian River Drive. The total budget for the project will be over $3,000,000. The Sebastian Parks and Recreation board has approved this conceptual plan and it was slated to go onto the March 12th City Council Agenda. As you can see below, the City Manager and staff are prepared to present their approval to the City Council. Up next we should have public workshops so that the community can get involved and make sure our favorite music, art, and entertainment venue gets all the upgrades we want as a community.
Latest Update - March 12th
Sebastian City Council, at the March 12th meeting, has agreed to have a workshop to discuss the $3,000,000 master plan for Riverview Park improvements. The meeting is scheduled for April 9th at 5pm at Sebastian City Hall in the Council Chambers.
Make it easy for me, what are the upgrades?
- Remove the Veterans Memorial and Four Chaplains Monument from Indian River Drive and relocate them to the US-1 and 512 intersection.
- Remove the playground and pavilions; build a new playground where the Veterans Memorial is.
- Close Harrison Street and redirect traffic through the parking lot and gravel driveway.
- Remove six boat slips from the end of the southern public boat dock and repurpose them for law enforcement boats.
- Build a new amphitheater in the center of the park with artificial turf grass.
- $3,000,000 in improvements, but we will continue to bring in port-o-potties and temporary sinks for major events where they serve food
- $1,000,000 in repairs, replacements, and upgrades for the Splash Pond
- Relocating the volleyball courts to the grassy area on the river near the docks
What’s next?
The city has the park improvements on the agenda for the March 12th meeting. The staff has drafted the documents to recommend the conceptual plan is approved as drafted. We spoke to Brian Benton, the City Manager, and he informed us that the item has been pulled from the agenda as they continue research into moving the Four Chaplains monument. The next city council meeting is March 26th, it is unclear if the park improvements will be on the next agenda but we will keep you informed.
How do I watch the meeting?
